Visual SLAM Technology: Basics and Application

Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (vSLAM) offers a lot of applications, which is why it is gaining popularity across the globe. As far as the commercial application is concerned, this technology is not developed enough yet. But it helps address the shortcomings of many navigation and vision systems. Therefore, it can become quite popular in the commercial industries as well. Let’s get a deeper insight into this technology.

First of all, it is important to keep in mind that visual SLAM is not the name of a specific software program or algorithm. The primary role of this technology is to identify the position and direction of a specific sensor in terms of its surroundings. At the same time, it helps map the environment that surrounds this sensor.

How Does it Work?

In most of these systems, successive camera frames are used to track set points. The idea is to triangulate their three-dimensional position. At the same time, this information is used to get an approximation of the camera pose. Primarily, these systems are used in order to map their surroundings with respect to the things around for better navigation.

Typically, 3D vision cameras used for this purpose, unlike other SLAM technologies. If there are enough tracking points in each frame, it is possible to understand the structure of the physical environment and the sensor orientation.

Types of Applications

Although visual SLAM has not developed yet, it has a lot of potential in different settings. But it is important to keep in mind that it plays a great role in the world of augmented reality. For the accurate projection of virtual images, precision mapping of the physical environment is required. And this is possible only with the help of visual SLAM technology.

Today, this technology is used in different field robots, such as lenders and robbers. Interestingly enough, this technology is used in the Land Rovers that were sent to Mars for exploration and navigation.

Aside from this, they are used in the field of agriculture. Field robots and drones use this technology to fly over crop fields. Besides, autonomous vehicles may use these systems to map and understand their surroundings.

Visual SLAM systems are capable of replacing GPS tracking navigation in some sectors. The problem with the GPS systems is that they are not that useful indoors. Besides, they are not that accurate. With the help of SLAM, these shortcomings can be eliminated. The reason is that these systems depend on satellites.

The thing is that this technology can be implemented in a lot of fields. This is the reason the demand for these systems will continue to rise. Since this technology is used in a lot of systems, many products such as autonomous vehicles will be available for the public down the road.

Tips & Tricks For Successful Vitrification

A successful cryopreservation program has become the onus of fertility clinics all over. Importantly, as ‘freeze all’ cycles are slowly making inroads, the dependence on an effective cryopreservation program is the need of the hour.

Vitrification has been the choice lately for cryopreservation and can have slight variations depending upon the temperature, cryo devices and the brand of the media. Nevertheless, the basic principle and protocol are similar considering all these factors. Vitrification procedure is accomplished with the help of the available Vitrification media. The embryos are subjected to ES (Equilibration media) followed by its incorporation into VS (Vitrification media) before they are loaded on to a cryo device and plunged into liquid nitrogen. As an embryologist, it has always been found that Vitrification is more daunting to master than ICSI or other procedures. Unfortunately, there isn’t an exhaustive learning module with respect to the same. Fertility clinics do not follow a standard training program for Vitrification which may result into incompetency of the operator, poor survival rates and fluctuations in results!

Vitrification of oocytes

The final step of embryo loading is the centerpiece of the whole procedure and the entire Vitrification program rests on the premise of that crucial last one minute. Naturally, the main focus will be on the last step which includes activities such as washing embryos in VS, loading them with minimal media on the cryo device and finally draining excessive media and plunging them into liquid nitrogen. The step is not difficult but certainly is meticulous considering the microscopic aspects of the same coupled with the race with time.

The biggest challenge in Vitrification is the composite of speed with time! However, the technique can be effectively implemented after an extensive stepwise way to learn it by self-devising a good training environment.

Firstly, when you get acquainted with the technique, just learning the protocol isn’t the key. There has to be an understanding of the science behind it. It has been seen people panicking when they see embryos shrinking in ES!

Secondly, for starters, it is recommended for embryologist to be familiar with all the components of a Vitrification system. The goal here would be to do things perfectly without time constraints. The last major step can be broken into mini steps for better acclimatization. Embryologist can learn to adjust the coarse knob of the microscope to pick up the embryos after they float owing to change in viscosity in VS, the focusing of the cryotop under the microscope, the placement of the hand, learning the process of washing and finally gaining the ability to load the embryos!

Thirdly, once you have perfected the step, time will come into the picture. Then the use of stop watch and practicing loading in its required time becomes the focus. Initially, the loading time may exceed even two mins. With practice, slowly, you will reduce the necessary time and finally place yourself in the stipulated range of sixty to ninety seconds! This practice can be done with degenerated oocytes.

Fourthly, once you have taken care of the time, the next natural factor will be survival! This is the stage where you will use discarded embryos and actually freeze them as if you are performing an actual procedure. Here, even the ES will come into your practice and you will observe intricate details such as the reaction of the embryos with the media. At this stage, thawing technique will also be incorporated as it too contributes to the overall survival. The results can be recorded and it will give an insight into the overall improvement of the operator.

Finally, once you are done with survival of embryos, it is always recommended to freeze for embryo donation patients as ED cycle harbors the best quality embryos. Blastocysts should be considered more in the initial phase of freezing which survives better than say day 2 or day 3 embryos. This can be furthered by increasing the number of cryo devices progressively corresponding with checking performance of the previously frozen cryo devices simultaneously.

This comprehensive way of learning Vitrification may take six months overall depending upon the cycles happening in a fertility clinic which certainly affects the availability of gametes and resources(such as expired media for practice). It can help attain better proficiency over the technique and the program can be robustly standardized in a working fertility center itself. Vitrification is a gateway for the embryos to hibernate in an ice age and maybe we can make their journey qualitatively smooth!

Appointments – Manage Your Time Better At Home to Be Effective

What would happen to you if your home life was more organized than it is right now? Can work-life balance be achieved? What are the tools at our disposal? Could scheduling appointments and keeping them at home help us save time and prioritize?

What is the challenge we face? I sometimes find that time spent at home can be the busiest time, especially in the times we live in. Imagine someone working from home, home-schooling children, and sometimes even doing a side hustle. Imagine also the full-time home-based entrepreneur. How do they manage to do all they need to do in a day?. We are living in a time when many entrepreneurs and even company employees have adopted work- at – home culture. This comes with its challenges as the lines become blurred between home and work. These blurred lines and constraints on the limited resource called time result in over-worked, under-rested, burnt-out individuals. Whilst good time management has been encouraged and indeed, embraced in the workplace, I believe more needs to be done in changing the mindset for the elusive work-life balance to be achieved.

What are the tools at our disposal? To manage time effectively at home, there are many interventions one can employ including setting goals for the day, prioritizing wisely, setting a time limit for every task, organizing oneself, and instituting the discipline of appointments. Yes, an appointment at home! We can spend time pontificating on the pros and cons of each intervention, however, I believe we need to focus on appointments and see how this can powerfully change the course of one’s day regardless of whether it’s a workday or weekend. Life is busy as it is without any intrusions. The question is how do you handle the one who announces that they are at the gate. These can be friends, neighbors, a salesman of some product you do not even need. I am not promoting regimentation here but rather a culture of filling your day with what’s important. Everything that we succeed at is because we carefully plan and execute it. I am a firm believer that you cannot manage time if you do not manage yourself thus I implore you to incorporate planning and appointments into your repertoire. I am not talking about something I do not do. I have to achieve many things in a day therefore I set appointments with my work, others, and myself.

Could scheduling appointments and keeping them on the home front help us save time and prioritize? Whereas we have established that it is a normal business practice to set appointments and keep them, we need to abandon the liberal open-door policy of allowing all and sundry to have access to us as and when they please on the home front. Please understand where I am coming from. We each have greatness within us but for us to achieve it we need to culture great habits. Employing the use of appointments at home and seeing only those people you had agreed to see removes non-essential encounters especially during the most productive hours. I know this will vary with culture, geographical region, or even level of affluence, whether you live in a low density or high-density residential area, but doesn’t negate the need to be organized and effective. Controlling access determines how organized you are and how well you will work and rest when the time for scheduled rest comes.

What do we need to do differently? We need to be disciplined and diligent, learn to say no, now is not a good time, let’s make an appointment for next week. What are the benefits of this approach? You are not always fire-fighting to meet deadlines, You are not always tired because you have not taken time out to rest. You have set aside enough time to spend with your loved ones or a loved one. If you are a busy person, I am sure you appreciate what I am saying. Whether it’s time to work uninterrupted, family time, or “me-time”, it takes some kind of order to enjoy it.

I am not saying that those that come unannounced are bad people. No, not at all, they probably are people you enjoy spending time with. Nevertheless, there must be prior communication so that you can attend to your visitor(s) when it is convenient for both you and them. It can be quite disrupting and a whole day can just pass by without achieving anything that you had planned to do.

As we grow older we begin to appreciate that rest and recovery need to be scheduled. The fact that I am relaxing doesn’t mean that I don’t have anything to do. One therefore cannot assume that just because you are at home you are available. Maybe you have scheduled that time to rest. That is important. You need to make an appointment with yourself, spouses need to also set aside time for each other. Parents need to schedule a time to spend with their children. When you have some sort of order in your life you determine who sees you and who you see. It also means that your relationships will be healthy and that makes you a happier person.

In conclusion, I believe that the work-life balance can be achieved. There are many tools at our disposal just like it is in the workplace.I believe we could do more and be happier if we are disciplined enough to make only the commitments we can keep.I am certain that setting appointments and keeping them at home help us save time and prioritize.
